Shingles immunisation
programme in Wales

The Department of Health introduced the national shingles
immunisation programme for people aged 70-79 to help protect
those who are most at risk from shingles and its complications.

The national programme in Wales runs from 1st April to 31st March each year.
As the programme will be phased in over the next few years, not everyone will
be eligible to receive vaccination this year. If you are eligible, your GP surgery
may contact you and ask you to book an appointment.

Who will receive vaccination?

People aged 70, 71, 72, 73, 78
or 79 on 1st September 2016.

What about people aged
under 70 or over 79 on
1st September 2016?

People aged under 70 will be
offered vaccination against
shingles in the year following
their seventieth birthday. People
aged 80 and over are not part of
the national programme because
vaccination seems to be less
effective in this age group.
